Tirath seeks reply on ‘sexy’ remark
After National Commission for Women chairperson Mamata Sharma claimed that “sexy meant beautiful”, women and child development minister Krishna Tirath has sought an explanation from her for the remark.
Speaking to this newspaper, the minister said that Sharma has been told to weigh her words before speaking in the future. “I have also asked her to give a written explanation under what context such a word was used,” she said. Adding that as NCW chairperson she should not have used the word. “I met her personally too. While, she has been insisting that she taking in some other context. I personally feel that we are here to work for the dignity of women and these kind of words do not send a right signal,” added Ms Tirath.
Ms Tirath also said that Sharma has been given clear instructions that “It shall not happen in future.” Ms Sharma’s remark that word “sexy” should not be taken in a negative connotation has already drawn the ire of women’s rights activists who demanded her resignation even as she rebutted criticism saying the comment was made in a “broad” context.
