Tihar’s ‘VIP’ inmates keep falling ill

The controversial dementia claim by sacked CWG organising committee chairman Suresh Kalmadi appears to be spreading among top corporate figures jailed over alleged involvement in the 2G spectrum scam in a bid to seek medical treatment outside Tihar Jail. Many of the accused in the 2G

scam have started reporting sick after Mr Kalmadi was admitted to AIIMS recently to convince jail officials that they needed “outside” treatment.
This strategy doesn’t seem to have worked: all the high-profile 2G accused were sent back to their cells after Tihar’s own doctors determined that their alleged ailments were non-existent.
The list of 2G accused complaining of illness includes Shahid Balwa, Surender Pipara, Karim Morani and Gautam Doshi. Mr Pipara had in fact managed to be transferred to AIIMS, but was brought back to the jail after it was found the claimed illness did not exist.
Sources said Swan Telecom promoter Shahid Usman Balwa went to the jail dispensary complaining of chest pain. The doctor, after checking for symptoms, found nothing of the kind and he was sent packing to his cell. After that Cineyug Films director Karim Morani too complained of chest pain, but he too failed to convince the doctor and had to return to his cell.
While Reliance ADAG’s Gautam Doshi complained of stomach ache, Mr Pipara complained of leg pain, the sources said, but a medical examination did not support their claims. Tihar officials said, however, that top-quality medical facilities were being provided to the high-profile inmates and if required they would be taken to outside medical facilities as was done in the case of Mr Kalmadi.
The jail officials have formulated a new policy to deal with this situation: if jail doctors found it necessary, the inmate would be taken to Deen Dayal Upadhyay Hospital under the supervision of an official, and if the doctors there referred the inmate to AIIMS or another facility, only then would he or she be taken there, said Tihar spokesperson Sunil Gupta.

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
