Thousands pay respects to assault victim
Thrissur: The 23-year-old woman, who succumbed to her injuries after she was pushed out of a moving train and allegedly raped, was cremated at the Ivor Madom at Pambady, on the banks of Bhrathapuzha this afteroon.
A large number of people poured into her home town to pay her respects when her body was brought after post moretm from the Thrissur Medical College today.
Sowmya's friends and co workers of a Kochi company also tearfully paid respects to their colleague.
Soumya, hailing from Manjakkad near Shornur, was attacked when she was travelling in the ladies compartment of a local train from Ernakulam to Shornur. She was pushed out of the train at Vallatholnagar railway station on the night of February one by the accused Govindaswamy, hailing from Tamil Nadu, and cruelly raped on the railtracks, police said.
She fought for her life for five days and succumbed to her injuries at the Thrissur medical college yesterday.
The accused was arrested on the same night itself.
He has been charged under sect 307 (attempt to murder) and 376 (Rape) and 302 (murder).
Sowmya, hailing from a very poor family, was the only earning member in the family and was going home in connection with a marraige proposal.
