‘They killed anyone who came in front’
I was inside Nakumatt for my rounds on Saturday. Around midday, I heard bullets being fired at the entrance of the mall. As the customers rushed inside, I quickly moved to the entrance of the supermarket to check if it was a robbery, but realised after 10 minutes that they were terrorists, as they were killing everyone who came in front of them.
They came through all three entrances simultaneously and took control of the mall in no time. We took most of our customers to the rear, our material-receiving area, and slowly moved them out with the help of the armed police. It took over three hours to make them secure. Many hid in various locations in the 5 lakh sq ft Westgate Mall.
Those who tried to escape were killed. It appears to be a well-planned attack. There are 10 terrorists holed up. They are holding some civilians hostage. The Army has surrounded the building.
