Theme 125 yrs of dedication

The theme of the 83rd Congress plenary session being held in the national capital from Saturday will be “125 years of dedication and service”. It will also meet to celebrate the party completing 125 years of its formation.

The Congress is holding its plenary this week at a time when party chiefs in nearly half of the states are not yet in place.
Senior party leader Oscar Fernandes admitted that 50 per cent of the PCC presidents were yet to be appointed by Mrs Sonia Gandhi after her re-election as the party chief for the fourth successive time.
The three-day plenary will begin with a meeting of the subject committee of the party on December 18, which will finalise the draft resolutions on political, economic and international situation as also on the 125 years of the party.
The Congress Working Committee, which has now been converted into a steering committee will be turned into the subjects committee as Mrs Gandhi, who has been authorised to nominate the new CWC, is yet to do so.
Mr Fernandes said that the plenary will see attendance of 10,000 PCC delegates and 1,250 AICC delegates apart from other participants from the party. One freedom fighter from each state will also attend the plenary.
More than 1,500 volunteers of the party will be overseeing the arrangements at the venue of the plenary — Burari.
The plenary is being held for the fifth time in Delhi but after a gap of over 32 years. The last was held in 1978 when Indira Gandhi was at the helm of affairs.
A sprawling complex has been converted into a colourful tent city decked up with posters.
Apart from having separate rooms for top leaders, including Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and party chief Sonia Gandhi, the venue also has a post office, conference hall and food courts which will treat guests to a variety of delicacies.
Delhi Congress chief J.P. Aggarwal, who has been overseeing the preparations, said an open conference hall will accommodate around 20,000 people while each of the four dinning halls will have the capacity of nearly 2,000.
He said food from almost all parts of the country will be available at the venue which will also have a medical centre and organisers are planning to set up a centre for railway and airline reservation.

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
