Teen falls into borewell in howrah
On a day when Mahi Upadhyay was recovered dead from a borewell after a four-day-long battle at Manesar in Haryana, a teenager in West Bengal fell into a deep well in Howrah district on Sunday afternoon. Roshan Mondal, aged around 16, fell into the well at around 3.30 pm. Till the reports last came in at 9:30 pm, he was yet to be rescued.
The incident took place at Eksara in Liluah. Local Trinamul Congress MLA Rajib Banerjee said, “Roshan, a daily labourer, slipped inside the well when a portion of the earth surface caved in while he was collecting water from it. He was working at a coal godown of one Devendra Yadav.” The narrow well, filled with water and poisonous gas, is adjacent to an under-construction building.
While Mr Banerjee assumed that the well is around 70 feet deep, state fire and emergency services minister Javed Ahmed Khan and deputy director (fire and emergency services) Tapan Ghosh said that the well has a depth of around 30 feet. Mr Ghosh further explained, “Its diameter is around 2.45 feet. The boy got stuck in the mud inside.” After Roshan fell, the construction workers could not understand what to do. The police and fire brigade were informed and soon a curious mob thronged the site. A proper rescue operation failed to start even after five hours.
