UP teachers protest dress code
First, students in Kanpur protested over the ban on jeans in degree colleges and now teachers of a degree college in Bareilly district are furious over the suggestion that all women teachers should wear sari to college.
The authorities in the well known Bareilly College recently suggested that all women teachers should wear sari in the institution.
The teachers are now up in arms over the proposal.
Ms Vandana Sharma, coordinator in the journalism department in the college, told reporters on Wednesday that the focus of the college authorities should be on improving teaching methodology, trai-ning and rapport with students than on teachers' dress. "This sounds completely illogical. The atmo-sphere in the college cannot be improved by imposing a dress code for the teachers," she said. Ms Purnima Anil, another faculty member, argued that since there was no dress code for male teachers, there was no sense in evolving one for female teachers. "In any case, one's dress cannot bring any qualitative change in the academic standards and the college authorities should restrict themselves to academics here. As far as being Indian is concerned, we will wear saris if the men agree to wear dhoti-kurta to college," Ms Purnima Anil said. College principal R.P. Singh said the circular regarding the dress code was issued with the intention of differentiating between the girl students and the young teachers.
