Tamil Nadu teachers flunk eligibility test
It is not only students who fail in examinations, sometimes their teachers do too. Of the 2,83,806 secondary grade teachers (paper-I) who handle classes 1-5, 2,82,071 failed to clear the Teacher Eligibility Test conducted by Teachers’ Recruitment Board (TRB) recently. Interestingly, only 713 graduate teachers (class 6-10) passed the exam (paper-II) among the 3,83,616 who appeared for it.
Releasing the results on Saturday, Mr Surjit K. Chaudhary, chairperson of TRB, said the state government had taken note of the low pass percentage.
Keeping in mind the welfare of children and the need for teachers to fill vacancies, the government directed TRB to conduct re-examination for candidates who failed to obtain 60 per cent marks.
TRB plans to conduct re-examination on October 3. All schools in the state would be closed on that day.
The government has directed TRB to increase the duration of the test time from one-and-a-half hours to three hours with additional 30 minutes for blind candidates.
Mr Chaudhary pointed out that the board decided to deduct five marks for candidates who failed to indicate the booklet series in the optical mark recognition (OMR) answersheet.
“A total of 83 candidates have qualified in both paper-I and II and 685 and 1,547 candidates appearing for paper-I and II respectively have been penalised for giving deficit and incorrect information in the OMR sheet. In some cases, the signature of candidates in the OMR sheet does not match the one in the application form.
The candidature of such cases has been declared invalid and they are debarred from writing the test for the next five years,” the TRB chairperson added.
