Tamil Nadu parties want airport named after MGR
Chennai: Stepping up pressure on the Centre and to further strengthen its earlier demand to name the modernized domestic airport terminal II in Chennai after former chief minister and AIADMK founder M.G. Ramachandran, the AIADMK government on Monday adopted a resolution, unanimously, in the Tamil Nadu legislative assembly, urging that the terminal be named after him.
Interestingly, Congress and DMK were among the opposition parties who welcomed the resolution moved by chief minister J. Jayalalithaa.
She said the adoption of resolution was necessary as civil Aviation minister Ajit Singh in his recent letter had suggested that the state’s demand should be accompanied by a legislatureresolution.
Bill moved to take over Annamalai university
In a move to “safeguard the welfare of students” and the livelihood of the teaching and non-teaching staff, the state government on Monday introduced a bill in the legislative Assembly to take over the affairs of Annamalai University.
The Annamalai University Bill, 2013 introduced by higher education minister P. Palaniappan sought to authorize the state to administer the university that has over 35,000 students in its campus and several lakh students pursuing distance education.
