At Taj Hotel, a sombre note
US President Barack Obama’s speech at Hotel Taj Mahal Palace and Tower on Saturday failed to meet the expectations of many who were excited about his visit. In his speech, Mr Obama praised the resolve and the resilience of Indians during the 26/11 terror attacks, but he made no direct reference to Pakistan or the fact that the Mumbai attackers were Pakistani nationals.
“Mumbai is a symbol of the incredible energy and optimism that defines India in the 21st century. And ever since those horrific days two years ago, the Taj has been the symbol of strength and resilience of Indians. So, yes, we are visiting the country to send a clear message that in our determination to give our people a future of security and prosperity, the US and India stand united,” Mr Obama said.
The US President said Americans watched the terror attacks and grieved along with the whole of India. “Those who attacked Mumbai wanted to demoralise this city and this country. But they failed because the very next day Mumbaikars came back to work. Hotel staff reported for their shifts. Workers returned to their businesses. And within weeks this hotel was once again welcoming guests from around the world.”
Though Mr Obama made no firm statement about Pakistan’s role in terrorism, he suggested the issue would be discussed in detail when he meets Prime Minister Manmohan Singh in New Delhi. “Indeed, today, the United States and India are working together more closely than ever to keep our people safe. And I look forward to deepening our counter-terrorism cooperation when I meet Dr Singh,” he said.
Earlier on Saturday, Mr Obama wrote a message in the hotel’s guest book that read, “We will always remember the events of the 26/11 attacks; not only the sorrow, but also the courage and humanity that was displayed that day. The United States stands in solidarity with all of Mumbai and India in working to eradicate the scourge of terrorism, and we affirm our lasting friendship with Indians.”
The US President and his wife Michelle each carried a white rose that they placed on the memorial at the hotel.
