T-protest: 42 MLAs, one MP resign
On the second day of protests in the Seemandhra region over the bifurcation of the state, legislators from the region cutting across party lines resigned in large numbers on Thursday.
However, four ministers — Ganta Srinivas Rao, Kasu Venkata Krishna Reddy, T.G. Venkatesh and E. Pratap Reddy — who also announced their resignations, put their decision on hold after chief minister N. Kiran Kumar Reddy assured them that he would once talk to the high command and convey their feelings after a meeting with Seemandhra leaders scheduled on August 3.
In all, 42 MLAs (30 from the Congress and 12 from the Telugu Desam), eight MLCs and one MP — S.P.Y. Reddy from Nandyala — resigned. The resignations came after a meeting of the legislators here on Thursday. More resignations are expected. Sixteen YSR Congress MLAs had resigned a few days ago. Chairman of the Official Language Commission Mandali Budda Prasad also gave in his resignation on Thursday.
