‘T-move shows UPA is in poll mode’
Noting that the current session of Parliament is too short to transact much business, the CPI(M) on Tuesday said that the UPA government’s legislative agenda was targeted at the upcoming general elections.
“The government is keen on the food security ordinance, Telangana, and the land acquisition bill. It seems they are preparing for elections,” CPI(M) leader Sitaram Yechury said. “Why are they remembering the Food Security Bill now? It was part of the government’s 100-day agenda when they came to power. Since then, 1,500 days have passed,” Mr Yechury insisted, adding that his party was opposed to the Food Security Bill in its present form.
The CPI(M) on Tuesday backed the government’s decision to amend the right to information law to ensure political parties do not come under it. “Political parties are not public authorities, the decision taken by political parties do not affect the public,” the CPI(M) leader said.
Following a petition by RTI activist S.C. Agrawal, the Central Information Commission (CIC) ruled that political parties were public authorities who now need to respond to RTI queries within six weeks.
