T-issue: UPA won’t backtrack

The UPA government and the Congress on Friday virtually ruled out going back on the issue of creating a separate Telangana state.

Party spokesperson P.C. Chacko acknowledged that fact there are serious differences within the Andhra Pradesh unit of the party on the issue but went on to add that his party has the inner resolve and strength to deal with it. He said, “There is no question of revisiting and going back on the decision, we have taken.”
Responding to a question on why the matter was not taken up in the Cabinet meeting held on Friday, Mr Chacko said that the Antony committee is in the midst of arriving at a consensus on the issue by talking to all the stakeholders on the issue.
Union minister Manish Tewari, too, echoed the views of his party colleague when he said, “On the question of Telangana, there have been sensitivities. It’s a process that has been under consideration for a fairly long period of time and after very detailed deliberations, after perusing the report of a commission appointed by the Government of India, a certain decision has been taken. That decision obviously continues to hold.” He added, “With regards to fleshing them out in terms of implementation, if I correctly recall, the home minister had made it clear that is the process that is under way.” On September 2, Union home minister Sushilkumar Shinde had stated that the note on Telangana would be sent to the Cabinet within 20 days.
Mr Chacko also pointed to the fact the issue is a very tricky one and that no government could take a call on it in the last several years. He said, “Why no government could take a decision on Andhra Pradesh tells everything.”
Answering a question on the model of conduct, Mr Manish Tewari said, “I don’t think that is going to be really a issue for the government.” The home ministry has prepared a draft on Telangana and that is to be sent to the Cabinet after scrutiny by Mr Shinde and vetting by the law ministry, the recommendations of the Antony committee too would be considered.

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
