T-activists reject PM appeal, KCR may go on fast
Telangana Rashtra Samithi chief K. Chandrasekhar Rao declared on Monday that the stir for a separate Telangana state would intensify and continue until the Centre announces a roadmap for its formation. He also rejected Prime Minister
Manmohan Singh’s request to call off the agitation in view of more time being required for the resolution of the problem. Mr Rao also threatened to go on a fast-unto-death again over the issue.
The Prime Minister, meanwhile, assured a Congress delegation from Telangana that their viewpoint would be conveyed to party chief Sonia Gandhi and also be placed before the Congress core committee for its consideration.
The delegation, comprising many senior state ministers, MPs, MLAs and MLCs, called upon Dr Sin-gh to immediately anno-unce a time-frame within which a decision would be taken on the divisive issue. They briefed Dr Singh about the agitation in Tela-ngana and requested him to intervene as the public in the region is not even in favour of celebrating the forthcoming festivals.
When asked about the response of the Prime Minister, Dr Geetha Reddy said, “He did not give us any assurance but he did tell us that he would talk to Congress president Sonia Gandhi and put their demands before the Congress core committee.” She added, “He expressed his understanding and sympathy to us. He said the issue needs to be resolved. He also told us that he would try to solve it as soon as possible.”
After meeting Prime Minister Singh and Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha Sushma Swaraj, Mr Rao said, “Without a roadmap it is not possible for us to call off the agitation. The momentum will be kept up and we will decide.”
Asked what the Prime Minister told the delegation, Mr Rao said, “The PM asked us to call off the agitation. We told him it is not in our hands. People in Telangana are very angry and they have even decided not to celebrate festivals. People are dying every day for the cause of Telangana.”
