Swelling rivers spark flood scare in Bihar
Many parts of the flood-prone north Bihar are currently under a flood scare as several rivers have witnessed an alarming rise in their water levels in the past few days, setting off a quickened erosion of large portions of the river banks and making people scared.
Major rivers like the Kosi, Gandak, Ganga and Baghmati have rapidly swollen due to torrential rains in their catchment areas and have exerted massive pressures on the banks, along which thousands of thickly populated villages are situated. At several places in their course, these rivers have also crossed the danger levels.
In West Champaran district, work started on Wednesday on building a support embankment beside the damaged ring embankment on the Gandak after the river’s basin was found overflowing with accumulated water. In Muzaffarpur district, the Baghmati’s right embankment has started leaking, said sources in the water resources department. In Khagaria, while the leak in the Kosi’s embankment that started on Saturday was brought under control, rising pressures of the swirling waters still cause worries, said officials.
