Surgeon, friends rape patient for 12 days
A college girl undergoing a surgery at a private clinic in Patna was allegedly gangraped for about 12 days by the senior surgeon and his friends and then abandoned at a nearby railway station, where she was found lying in a sick and unconscious condition.
The surgeon, Dr Ramesh Prasad Singh, a former Bihar unit president of the Indian Medical Association (IMA) and son of a former MLA, also allegedly made an MMS video of the sexual acts with Reena (name changed), a BCom student and daughter of a police assistant sub-inspector. She had been operated upon for a gall bladder disorder by Dr Singh, aged about 62, at his clinic in Kankarbagh area and did not return home after a follow-up visit there on September 26, her family said. She was found lying on the platform of Danapur railway station 12 days later on Tuesday.
The police, who had received a kidnapping complaint against Dr Singh on September 27 in connection with the girl’s missing, apparently took no steps for her recovery. Even when she surfaced and told the police of the sexual atrocities she was subjected to, police officials visited the doctor’s place only after media pressure. Some police officials who visited Dr Singh’s place were photographed as having lunch with him there.
Dr Singh is yet to be arrested as the police found admitted at the ICU of a local hospital for a heart ailment on Wednesday. But the former head of the NMCH’s surgery department managed to speak to some journalists from the ICU on his mobile phone and say: “This girl’s family is trying to defame me and extract money from me”.
“The police are yet to get the girl medically examined to confirm sexual attacks. They are also yet to recover the MMS clip she told of in her recorded statement,” said Kiran Devi, a social worker who met the girl.
Dr Singh, who claims innocence, is said to be using his political connections. One of his daughters had contested the 2010 Assembly polls on a Congress ticket.
