Suicide bid by BJD leader’s ‘daughter’
Sanjita Dhali, who claims to be the daughter of former minister and influential BJD leader Arabinda Dhali, on Thursday attempted to commit suicide by consuming an overdose of sleeping pills.
The 24-year-old lady has been admitted to Capital Hospital here. Her condition, according to doctors treating her, is stable and out of danger.
Sanjita, a mother of two daughters, has been fighting a long legal battle against her claimed father who refuses to accept her as his daughter. The court has also ordered a paternity test.
On July 26, 2009, Sanjita created ripples in the political circle here when she claimed that she is the daughter of the senior BJD MLA. She said that Mr Dhali had deserted her mother when she was barely three months old.
Later, Sanjita lodged a complaint with the Mahila police station here demanding legal sanction to the claim.

Orissa Cong MP claims bid on life

Former Orissa chief minister and Congress MP Hemanand Biswal claimed an attempt on his life on Thursday morning when a former aide allegedly barged into his K. Kamraj Lane residence and “tried to fire” at him.
Mr Biswal, 71, who represents the reserved Sundargarh constituency of Orissa in the LS, claimed that his former assistant, Prabhat Kumar Sharma, 50, who was sacked after alleged financial irregularities, tried to shoot the MP at his residence at around 4 am.
“I first made a PCR call and reported the matter to the police. I also called the station house officer of Tughlaq Road police station and made a complaint against Sharma. The FIR has been registered on my complaint. I have written letters to the home ministry for providing me security but nothing has been done so far,” Mr Biswal said.
A complaint forwarded to Tughlaq Road police station states that the Mr Sharma attempted to fire at him in his bathroom when Mr Biswal caught him opening a briefcase.

K’taka bypoll: BJP, JDS pick up a seat each
Bengaluru : BJP and JDS in Karnataka on Thursday bagged a seat each in the bitterly fought September 13 bypolls that left the Congress badly mauled. The ruling BJP wrested Kadur seat from Congress, with its nominee Y.C. Vishwanath defeating JDS candidate Y.S.V. Dutta by 13,897 votes. The Congress was relegated to third place with K.M. Kemparaju securing 30,330 votes as against BJP’s 55,796 votes and JDS’ 41,899 votes.
In the triangular close contest for Gulbarga South, JDS nominee Aruna Patil Revoor emerged triumphant, with the BJP conceding the seat. —PTI
