Strike cripples Bihar, Nitish orders probe
A day-long strike of work by Bihar’s government doctors in protest against the brutal murder of a jail doctor by inmates largely paralysed medical services across the state on Tuesday and forced chief minister Nitish Kumar to order the transfer of two top officials for negligence.
Reeling under growing public and political outrage following the murder of Dr Bhudeo Singh by convicted prisoners inside the Gopalganj jail on Sunday, Mr Kumar ordered the transfer of Gopalganj district’s controversial magistrate Pankaj Kumar Pal and inspector-general of jails, Ramesh Lal, with immediate effect.
Mr Kumar also announced an ex-gratia of `10 lakh to the slain doctor’s family, payment of his salary to his family till his remaining service life, and a government job to a member of his family.
The two officials’ transfers were ordered following a report by the home department principal secretary Amir Subhani, who had conducted a probe into the matter.
