Stratfor confirms emails genuine, criticises release
Wikileaks on Monday released files with details of Bhopal activists lobbying against Dow Chemical Company from a bundle of more than five million emails from the Texas-headquartered security think tank Stratfor.
“I was 10 years old when the Bhopal tragedy happened and I saw the horror that happened then and I see the horror that is happening now,” said Farah Edwards Khan, a Bhopal survivor. “I am not surprised by what is happening. I know that Dow is a dirty company, they have messed up Bhopal,” she said. Indian writer Indra Sinha said that it is worth remembering that “some of the world’s poorest people have been fighting this battle for almost 30 years now.”
Colin Toogood, from Brighton-based Bhopal Medical Appeal, said that the work of their charity was being monitored by Startfor “because we are still looking for some sort of justice for the people of Bhopal disaster.”
“The question being why are they sniffing around us and the answer can only be that they have something to hide,” Mr Toogood said. “We work closely with International Campaign For Justice, which has more hardcore activists and the ones who you might think would be spied upon,” he added.
Stratfor criticised the release and confirmed that the emails were genuine. “In December, thieves compromised Stratfor’s data systems and stole a large number of company emails, along with other private information of Stratfor readers, subscribers and employees.”
