State Child Rights panel still not set up
Hyderabad: Six months after the government announced that a Child Rights Commission would be set up, no move towards this has been made.
M. Achyuta Rao, president of the AP Balala Hakkula Sangham, who has been fighting for children’s rights in the state, said he was disappointed with government’s attitude. “The government is indifferent as children do not constitute a vote bank. In view of the rise in cases of sexual abuse of children, child labour, trafficking and slavery, the commission has now become a necessity. It could speed up the process to render justice,” he said.
A GO released by the women and child welfare department said the commission would consist of a chairperson and six members, of which at least two shall be women. In April, the department issued a notice inviting applications for suitable candidates.
Women and child welfare minister Sunitha Laxma Reddy said they will set up the commission soon. “We have got about 150-160 applications, the selection proce-ss is underway,” she said.
