Spouses campaign for UP nominees

At 63, Satyawati Misra shows boundless energy as she goes about talking to housewives, women, girls and seeking votes for husband Kalraj Misra, who is contesting the Lucknow East seat on a BJP ticket.

Surrounded by a band of female supporters, Satyawati rarely delivers speeches and prefers a house to house campaign and says, “We are fight till the end and win with a thumping majority.”
With just two days left for Lucknow to go to polls, the wives of almost all contestants are now out on the streets seeking votes for their better halves.
Swati Misra, wife of Abhishek Misra, the SP candidate from Lucknow North, is also a faculty member at IIM but that does not stop her from hitting the campaign trail. She accompanies her husband and while he talks to the men, she interacts with the women.
A friend accompanying Swati quips, “This is Valentine week and this campaign is the best gift that Swati could give to her husband.
Madhu Tandon, wife of Gopal Tandon who is contesting from Lucknow North on a BJP ticket, is another wife who spends almost the same time in campaigning as her husband. She is trying to cover maximum ground before the polling day arrives and reminds the women of the work that her husband and father-in-law BJP MP Lalji Tandon have done for the constituency. The fact that Madhu has been actively involved in social work in the constituency is an added advantage.
Mamta Dubey, wife of BSP minister Nakul Dubey, who is contesting on a BSP ticket from Bakshi ka Talab, is also working overtime to ensure her husband’s re-election from the seat.
Listing her husband’s achievements and promising that the remaining demands would be fulfilled soon, she moves from locality to locality campaigning for him. “We chose different areas every day so that there is no over-lapping and even the remotest corner of the constituency is covered,” she informs.
Bindu Bora, wife of Neeraj Bora, Congress candidate from Lucknow North, finishes her household chores in the morning and then spends the entire day campaigning for her husband. Bindu, who also manages the family business that includes a restaurant, a hospital and an educational institution, is competent at public dealing and actually enjoys campaigning.
While the wives are out campaigning for the husbands, the husbands are also chipping in with support where wives are contesting elections. Mr P.C. Joshi, husband of UPCC president Rita Bahuguna Joshi who is contesting the Lucknow Cantt seat, takes care of the management part of the campaign.
