Spontaneous student protests at Osmania
The Srikrishna Committee report evoked spontaneous protests in the hotbed of Telangana movement, Osmania University, on Thursday where students torched an RTC bus at the Arts College.
The students also tried to take out a rally to Indira Park. However, the police, which was present in full force, fired teargas shells to disperse them following which students resorted to stone-pelting at the police at the Osmania University police station and at Andhra Mahila Sabha.
The Osmania University Joint-Action Committee (OUJAC) called for a “Telangana bandh” on Friday which evoked a mixed response. The Telangana Joint-Action Committee (TJAC) said there was no need to call for a bandh as the report was not against the formation of a separate state, and urged students to remain calm and not to take hasty decisions.
Meanwhile, people in Hyderabad heaved a sigh of relief as there were no untoward incidents as anticipated after the contents of the report were made public.
Most people preferred to remain indoors expecting some violence from T-supporters, particularly students.
This was evident from the fact that many schools and colleges worked for just half the day. Many people were glued to their television sets, surfing channels for the summary of the report.
Though Osmania University postponed the ongoing Ph.D admissions on Friday, the authorities said they will resume from Saturday.
