Speed governor scam throughout Haryana

What was being suspected till now is finally confirmed: The speed governor scam in Haryana is spread all over the state and not just limited to any one particular area. Interestingly, this has been revealed by the investigations of the state police’s crime branch itself which recently conducted a raid in Rohtak arresting five persons of a gang involved in the running of the speed governor racket.

The gang, police source said, used to first install the speed governor in a commercial vehicle. But after the vehicle was cleared by the transport authority officials and given a fitness certificate, the speed governor used to be removed with half the money being paid back to the vehicle owner. The police also managed to recover 11 such speed governors also.
But it clearly reveals that the state government is hardly initiating any measures in checking this menace. In a classic case of too-little too-late, the state police merely conducted raids at the Rohtak transport authority arresting five members of the gang.
Sustained interrogation of the accused persons revealed that the speed governor scam was not just limited to Rohtak but it was spread all over the state with other major centres being Faridabad, Bahadurgarh, Gurgaon, Nuh, Kurukshetra, Panipat, Sonipat, Karnal and Ambala.
What is even surprising is that the police failed to arrest any transport authority officials with whose complicity this well organized racket is being run.
“There is no denying the fact that this is a multi-crore racket in which officials from various departments are involved. The state government needs to show stronger will to crack down against the erring officials and such criminal gangs,’’ senior police official remarked.
During the Rohtak raid, the police realised that the entire operation was being conducted right under the nose of the transport department officials.
Police sources admitted that during custodial interrogation the accused persons revealed that majority of the commercial vehicles in the state were operating without a speed governor, thanks to this modus operandi.
Thus, a scheme that was implemented on directions of the Punjab and Haryana high court has only ended up in a money spinning exercise for corrupt state government officials.
