Special session for Lokpal in Jan?
Speculation is rife whether or not the Lokpal bill would be passed in the current session of Parliament, which will be concluded on December 22.
While a section of MPs fear that it may not be passed because of several amendments to be moved once the cabinet takes a view on the standing
committee report on it, others say the government might have to call a special session in January for the purpose. This is because it will be a historic bill on many counts and thereby cannot be passed in a hurry or under a pressure.
Sources said the Union Cabinet is expected to discuss the bill in the light of the standing committee report on December 20.
It could be placed in the Lok Sabha next day and the two Houses of Parliament might spend three days for discussion and passage. A Union minister said the session could be extended by a day, that is, till December 23.
But the general view among MPs is that it should discuss next month by calling a special session.
Janata Dal (United) leader Sharad Yadav has already demanded that either the session should be extended or call a special session for the purpose.
But a BJP leader on Tuesday said it is for the government to decide. “Our stand on the Lokpal bill is clear,” he said.
Significantly, the Opposition parties to have been divided on Team Anna’s draft on the Jan Lokpal Bill.
