SP threat to ask IAS officers to leave UP
The ongoing tussle between the Centre and the Uttar Pradesh government hit a new low on Monday with the latter threatening to ask New Delhi to withdraw all IAS officers serving in the state after the Centre indicated it could intervene in the ongoing controversy if suspended IAS officer Durga Shakti Nagpal approached it directly.
The UP cadre of the Indian Administrative Service has a current strength of 577 officers.
Speaking to reporters on the on the opening day of Parliament’s Monsoon Session, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh said the Centre was in touch with the state government on the matter, and said all norms and procedures laid down will be followed in this case.
Sources in the department of personnel and training said it would soon write to the law ministry seeking legal opinion on amending the service rules for all-India service officers to protect them from any future harassment of this nature. This, sources added, will not be limited only to the IAS but all other all-India services like the IPS and the Indian Forest Service. The sources added that the rules might be changed to protect officers from political influence during deputation.
Minister of state for personnel V. Narayanasamy clarified on Monday that even under the existing rules, an officer who had been suspended has the right to appeal against the suspension orders. “So far she has not approached us. But in case she does send an appeal, we will forward it to the state government and seek its opinion.
