SP stalls House over leaders’ house arrest
The Lok Sabha witnessed virtually continuous disruption of the House proceedings on Monday morning after Samajwadi Party MPs resorted to sloganeering and trooped into the well of the House over what they claimed was the “house arrest” of their leader Mulayam Singh by the Mayawati government.
Their sloganeering and standing in the well of the House forced to adjournments and later saw the discussion on the Railway Budget too being disrupted. While the SP MPs stood shouting slogans like “Tanashahi wali sarkar nahin chalegi” and “Uttar Pradesh sarkar ko barkhast karo”, other MPs delivered their speeches on the railways “demand for grants” amidst the din.
The disruption in the House began soon after Speaker Meira Kumar had read out the obituary reference for Congress leader Arjun Singh, who passed away last week. They rushed into the well of the House claiming that Mr Yadav had been put under house arrest to prevent him from leading a three-day agitation against the state government.
The Speaker then allowed SP MP Reoti Raman Singh to speak on the matter. He claimed that Mr Yadav, some SP MPs and party workers had been put under detention. Upon which Leader of the House and finance minister Pranab Mukherjee told the agitated SP MPs that he requested the home minister to ascertain the facts and inform the House during the day.
However, his assurance was in vain as the SP MPs continued to disrupt the House proceedings. The disruption continue till about 12.40 pm and the Speaker finally adjourned the House until 2 pm.
