Sonia takes poll position
Sonia Gandhi, in her first address to Congress Party in Parliament (CPP) after the recent electoral debacles in Uttar Pradesh, Punjab and Goa, asked MPs to focus on the coming Assembly elections in Opposition-ruled states and expose “misgovernance and corruption” there on the basis of CAG and lokayukta reports.
“We must expose the Opposition doublespeak and obstructive behaviour in Parliament,” the Congress president said, adding, “We must shed all manner of factional behaviour and fight as one disciplined team at all levels. That will be the single-most-important factor to decide if we win or lose.”
Spelling out the Congress electoral strategy and its focus on welfare, she said “unity, discipline and commitment” would be the key to success in future.
The CPP meeting was held days after the high-powered A.K. Antony Committee submitted its report on the reasons for the recent poll loses.
Congress and BJP are now heading for a straight fight in Gujarat, Himachal, MP, Delhi, Chhattisgarh and Karnataka.
“As we approach a series of state elections in the coming months, we must draw upon the lessons of previous polls. We must project our work as a central government and expose hollow claims of Opposition-ruled state governments,” Ms Sonia said.
“It seems almost fashionable these days to criticise the government... We must not allow this deflect us.”
