Sonia: Stop factional activity, expose Opp.
Congress president Sonia Gandhi, in her first address to the Congress Party in Parliament (CPP) after the recent electoral setbacks in Uttar Pradesh, Punjab and Goa, asked her MPs to focus on the coming Assembly elections in Opposition-ruled states and expose the “misgovernance and corruption” there on the basis of CAG and Lokayukta reports.
“We must expose the Opposition’s ‘doublespeak’ and its obstructive behaviour in blocking Parliament,” she said. “We must shed all manner of factional behaviour and fight as one disciplined team at all levels. That will be the single most important factor to decide whether we win or lose.”
Mrs Gandhi said “unity, discipline and commitment” would be the key to success in future elections.
The CPP meeting was days after the A.K. Antony Committee submitted its report to Mrs Gandhi on the causes of the party’s debacle in the recent elections. The Congress and the BJP are now heading for a straight fight in Gujarat, Himachal Pradesh, Mad-hya Pradesh, Delhi, Chhat-tisgarh and Karnataka.
“As we approach a series of state elections in the coming months, we must draw upon the lessons of the previous polls. We must project our work and expose the hollow claims of Opposition-ruled state governments,” she said.
“It seems to be almost fashionable these days to criticise the government... We must not allow this deflect us. We must speak forcefully and with confidence on what we have achieved — and there is much we have to show despite the difficult economic times,” she said.
