Sonia sets up panel for Seemandhra grievances
The Congress high command will be setting up a three-member committee to look into the grievances of Seemandhra at a time when the issue of Hyderabad to be made a UT is gaining ground.
Seemandhra MPs stalled proceedings in the Lok Sabha in the last 48 hours thus mounting pressure on the Union ministers from the state to quit. Delaying or divisive tactics by the party and the Centre could be counter-productive, feared the party MPs from the state.
On Tuesday, Union ministers from the Seemandhra region met Congress president Sonia Gandhi here and expressed the “sense of deprivation” prevailing in Andhra and Rayalseema regions. During the meeting, Mrs Gandhi told them that a committee of three senior leaders will be formed, which will look into their grievances, as the ministers told her about apprehensions among people in their constituencies. During their meeting, the ministers, including Mr M.M. Pallam Raju, Mr K.S. Rao, Mr K. Chiranjeevi, Mr J.D. Seelam, Ms Panabaka Lakshmi, Ms D. Purandheswari and Ms Kruparani Killi, are said to have raised the demand that Hyderabad should be retained as permanent common capital of the two Telugu-speaking states on the line of Chandigarh. Two other Union ministers from the region, K.C. Deo and Kotla Jayasurya Prakasha Reddy, were not part of the delegation.
Mr Chiranjeevi said, Mrs Gandhi assured them that the grievances of the people from Andhra and Rayalaseema regions will be taken care of.
