Some J&K cops quit over stir
Caught in a different situation and facing tremendous pressure, a section of Kashmiri policemen is desperately trying to placate the local population as the anger over the killings in security forces’ actions is ever-increasing.
On Tuesday, two policemen from Naidkhai area of northern Bandipore district reportedly quit and walked out of their units. A 21-year-old youth was killed and another wounded in police firing at Naidkhai on July 31.
The policemen who have resigned are Merajuddin Lone and Bilal Ahmed Rather. Reports said that the duo was under tremendous pressure from the locals to quit their jobs with the police department. A Srinagar newspaper Greater Kashmir quoted Mr Rather as saying “I took the step as my conscience did not allow me to carry out the orders which put my fellow citizens at risk.”
An official handout here, meanwhile, said that the district magistrate of frontier Kupwara Showkat Ahmad Mir has placed Zonal Education Officer (ZEO) Trehgam, Mohammad Munawar Shah under suspension for dereliction of duties.
