Sinha quits BJP post in protest over CM choice
The crisis-ridden BJP faced yet another jolt on Thursday when senior leader Yashwant Sinha resigned as the party’s Punjab in-charge in protest over the choice of Arjun Munda as Jharkhand chief minister.
The name of Mr Sinha, a former Union minister who represents Hazaribagh in the Lok Sabha, had been proposed by Bharatiya Janata Party parliamentary party chairman L.K. Advani for the Jharkhand chief ministership.
This, however, was not accepted by BJP president Nitin Gadkari, who went ahead and installed Mr Munda as chief minister.
Mr Advani was in fact kept out of the loop when the party asked Mr Munda to initiate talks with the JMM over government formation.
Sources said Mr Sinha told party leadership he would not be able to give proper attention to the Punjab job as he is also chairman of the parliamentary standing committee on finance. There was no official reaction from the BJP.
Mr Sinha had incidentally resigned from all BJP posts after the party came a cropper in last year’s Lok Sabha election.
When Mr Gadkari became party president, Mr Sinha had found no place in his newly reconstituted team.
