Ship firing tussle still on, Italians move high court
India and Italy continued to tussle Wednesday over the two Italian marines who shot dead two Indian fishermen last week as Italy’s deputy foreign minister Steffan de Mistura met minister of state for external affairs Preneet Kaur, who reiterated New Delhi’s firm line on the law taking its course.
Mr Mistura, who rushed here after the two marines’ arrest, told reporters: “We want truth to prevail”.
In Kerala, chief minister Oommen Chandy said Wednesday the state “will proceed with the investigation”. The Italians moved the Kerala high court seeking quashing of murder charges against the marines.
A Kerala court also directed the Enrica Lexie owners to furnish `25 lakhs as a bank guarantee after the family of one of the dead fishermen filed a petition seeking `1 crore in compensation.
