Sharad & Uma detained in UP
Pro-reservation leaders, including Janata Dal (United) president Sharad Yadav were detained as the Akhilesh government ordered a clamp down on a reservation mahapanchayat in Allahabad on Tuesday.
Mr Sharad Yadav was detained in Ghaziabad on Tuesday while Apna Dal leader Anupriya Patel was placed under preventive arrest in Rae Bareli and Indian Justice Party national president Udit Raj was detained at the Allahabad airport. Mr Sharad Yadav was kept in a guesthouse in Ghaziabad and later sent back to Delhi by the state police.
The government spokesman said that the leaders were detained due to prevailing tension in Allahabad over the pro-reservation rally.
“A showdown between pro and anti-reservation groups is on the cards and we cannot take any chances,” said a government spokesman. The Allahabad district administration has banned any rally or public gathering in the city and prohibitory orders under Section 144 have been clamped.
Meanwhile, BJP leader and former Madhya Pradesh chief minister Uma Bharti on Tuesday started a dharna protesting against the Uttar Pradesh government for preventing her from visiting riot-hit areas here. Ms Bharti was stopped at Satheri village on Canal Road, about 25 km from here.
