Severed hand rejoined after 10-hr surgery
The police has arrested Ashraf and Jaffar, two activists of the Muslim fundamentalist outfit, Popular Front, in connection with the attack on a college lecturer on Sunday in whi-ch his right hand was cut off. They were remanded to judicial custody for 14 days.
Two others, identified as Ali and Kamaruddin, have also been taken into custody from Aluva and are being questioned.
An eight-member gang had attacked the lecturer, Prof T.J. Joseph, 52, on Sunday while he was returning from Sunday mass with his mother and sister.
Prof. Joseph, a Malayalam lecturer, had been suspended in March for preparing a controversial question paper which hurt religious sentiments.
Investigators have traced the vehicle used for the attack to one Ali, a native of Kothamangalam.
Though police raided his residence on Sunday night, he had gone underground by then. Cops have spread a dragnet in several districts to trace those involved in the attack.
Prof Joseph’s severed hand was rejoined with his right arm after a 10-hour surgery in a speciality hospital in Kochi.
Meanwhile, the home minister, Mr Kodiyeri Balakrishnan, said he government would not allow Taliban style activities in Kerala and would apprehend everyone connected with the attack on the lecturer.
