Serial rapist flees Karnataka jail
In the first incident of its kind, pointing to a shocking lapse of security, a serial rapist and psychopath wanted in 26 cases of rape, dacoity and murder across Karnataka and Tamil Nadu escaped from the Parappana Agrahara central prison by jumping over a 30-foot wall fitted with an electric fence around midnight on Sunday.
The accused, M. Sankar alias Jaishankar (34), a truck driver, is originally from Kanniampatty in Salem.
The police suspect that Jaishankar escaped from his cell around midnight using a duplicate key. The area received a heavy downpour on Saturday night, causing a temporary power cut at the prison. This disabled the electric fences across the jail’s compound. The accused then allegedly scaled the compound wall separating the men’s prison from the women’s; walked on the connecting wall to the electric fence, jumped over using a bamboo pole, and climbed down the 30-foot wall with help of a thick leather strap tied to the bottom of the fence.
Additional director general of police (Prisons) K.V. Gagandeep said that 11 prison officials, including an assistant superintendent, a chief warder, two head warders, two jailers and six warders have been suspended for alleged dereliction of duty.
Deputy inspector general (Prisons) M.C. Vishwanathaiah said, “A preliminary enquiry has been ordered. The suspended officials are: Assistant superintendent C.V. Math, Head Wards Krishnaiah and Naduvina Mani, chief warder Koparde, jailers E.M. Mahanteshappa and Mohan Kumar, and warders Shashidhar Badigere, Jayakumar, Ramesh Poojari, and Shrishaili.” Sources said Jaishankar was a well-built man weighing 71 kgs at a height of 5’ 10’’. He had reportedly gotten his head and facial hair shaved, and is thought to be wearing either a fake police uniform or a prison uniform. Officials neither confirmed nor denied that Jaishankar reportedly used a pair of rubber gloves stolen from the hospital to aid him in his escape. Sniffer dogs were deployed to try and track the accused based on the scent of his blood, but rain is said to have washed away most of the evidence. Official sources said the Anekal forests, and areas of Hosakote, Hosur, Krishnagiri, Ananthpur, villages in Karnataka-Andhra border can be his possible destinations.
