Sentencing of Kasab tomorrow
Mumbai, May 4: The fate of Ajmal Aamir Kasab will be decided by the trial court here on Thursday. Special judge M.L. Tahiliyani, after hearing the prosecution and defence on the quantum of punishment, said he needed a day to deliberate.
In a day-long hearing on Tuesday, special public prosecutor Ujjwal Nikam demanded death the penalty while Kasab’s lawyer argued he should not be sent to the gallows.
Mr Nikam said: “While there are eight aggravated circumstances calling for the maximum penalty, there is no mitigating circumstance in favour of the accused.”
Mr Nikam said offences under Sections 121 and 302 of the Indian Penal Code are punishable either with the death sentence or life imprisonment.
Kasab’s lawyer K.P. Pawar presented arguments on why the Pakistani terrorist should not be awarded the death sentence.
