‘Scandals will not impede economy’

India born British businessman Gulam Noon said on Friday that the Indian economy will gro-w despite the scandals which have hit the country.
“India will progress irrespective of this. India is going to progress nobody can stop it... corruption or no corruption. This is because Indian economy is not driven by politicians. Indian economy is despite the politics. We have some brilliant entrepreneurs in the country,” Lord Noon said in an interview to this newspaper. However, Lord Noon, who is also known as the “Curry King”, warned that corruption dents India’s image and might impact the FDI flow into the country if the problem persisted. “It damages the reputations. People want to come to India. If it persist, inward investment in this country could be, not completely stop, but people will think,” said Lord Noon.
While Lord Noon supported Anna Hazare for bringing the issue of corruption to the forefront, he was dismissive of any attempt to surpass Parlia-ment. “Anna Hazare and company has brought matter on surface but you cant over ride the Parliament which has already been elected. I can understand the frustration of people like Anna Hazare but you can’t say enact the bill and pass the bill and my people will sit in the committee. It is not going to happen as it is against the principle of democracy,” he said. “Anna Hazare and company sometimes I feel try to supersede the Parliament. I appreciate what he has done at least he has highlight, he has brought awareness. But you cant say that Prime minister will also come under the Lokpal bill, judges will also come under the bill. You can pressurise the politicians, talk to them but you cant over ride the Parliament,” added Lord Noon.

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
