SC: States dump PM diktat in bin
The Supreme Court on Thursday raised serious questions on the governance deficit, saying things had come to an “unfortunate” pass that the court had to issue contempt threats to states to implement even the Prime Minister’s directions to them on important issues.
The strong comments on non-implementation of even the PM’s orders came after eight states were found in “default” over setting up special CBI courts for speedy trials of corruption cases as directed by Dr Manmohan Singh in 2009.
“The majority of cases taken by special CBI courts involve cases against public servants... while the Prime Minster’s letter is thrown into the dustbin. It is unfortunate that only under the threat of contempt they (states) take a decision,” observed a bench of Justices G.S. Singhvi and S.J. Mukhopadhaya.
