SC grants bail to Pakistani doctor Chisty

The Supreme Court Monday granted bail to Pakistani doctor Mohammad Khalil Chisty, who is undergoing life imprisonment in a jail in Ajmer for involvement in a clash that resulted in the death of a person.

An apex court bench headed by Justice P. Sathasivam granted bail to the virologist, 80, subject to conditions to be imposed by the trial court.

Chisty's age and the long duration of incarceration weighed in his favour.

Senior counsel U.U. Lalit, who appeared for Chisty, told the court that his client could not move out of Ajmer as his visa was limited to the holy city.

Chishty, a virologist at the Karachi Medical College, is accused of killing a man during a brawl in April 1992 in Ajmer.

He was in the city to offer prayers at the famous dargah (shrine) of Sufi saint Hazrat Khwaja Moinuddin Chisty when the incident happened.
