SC: Arrest, jail Pappu Yadav
The Supreme Court has directed the CBI and DGP of Bihar to arrest former RJD MP Rajesh Ranjan, alias Pappu Yadav, forthwith and put him behind bars for flouting the top court’s order cancelling his bail in the case of the murder of CPI(M) leader Ajit Sarkar.
Pappu Yadav, who had even held a “darbar” inside Patna’s Beur jail during the trial, has been awarded a life sentence in the Sarkar murder.
He was granted bail by the Patna high court but the apex court cancelled it after allegations that he had violated the bail conditions. The apex court had directed him to surrender.
But instead, he allegedly went underground and filed an application in the top court for a review of its order and, till the review decision, exemption from surrendering. “We have carefully gone through the review petition and the connected papers as also the application for exemption from surrender. We do not find any merit therein and both are dismissed accordingly,” a bench comprising Justices Markandey Katju and A.K. Patnaik said.
The Supreme Court, in an express direction, said the CBI and Bihar DGP must “execute” the May 3 order “forthwith” and submit a report within four weeks about compliance with the direction.
