SC-appointed panel says Mullaperiyar dam is safe, asks Kerala to reconsider building new one
Sources have revealed that the Supreme-court appointed Empowered Committee on the Mullaperiyar dam crisis has dismissed Kerala's fears saying the structure 'is safe'.
The panel, which was constituted in February 2010 with a mandate to look into all aspects of the dam, including the safety aspect, has so far carried out over a dozen tests and studies through various agencies.
The committee was supposed to submit this report on April 30.
Sources earlier said the committee has received the last report from the Central Water and Power Research Station, Pune, which analysed the drilling work conducted by it on samples done on the nine drilling works.
The final report by the committee is said to be 'the world’s one of the most comprehensive and scientific investigation of a water reservoir'.
Highly-placed sources told Deccan Chronicle last month the report on the 116-year-old structure, which has become a sensitive issue in Tamil Nadu and Kerala, would be submitted in a sealed envelop, the content of which could not be disclosed.
