Sallu faces 10-yr jail in hit-and-run
Bollywood actor Salman Khan could face maximum punishment of up to 10 years in prison after a sessions court Wednesday framed charges of culpable homicide not amounting to murder, rash and negligent driving, causing hurt by endangering life, causing grievous hurt and causing damage to property against him. Khan, who was earlier tried for causing death by negligence, will now stand trial for culpable homicide in the 2002 hit-and-run case in which he allegedly crushed a group of people sleeping on the pavement in Bandra.
Sessions judge U.B. Hejib read out the charges, to which Khan pleaded “not guilty”. The court will now issue summonses to witnesses and record their statements.
Khan was also charged with cancellation of registration of vehicle read with another section related to driving vehicle in contravention of rules and driving at great speed after taking drinks under the Motor Vehicles Act, as well as Bombay Prohibition Act for driving under the influence of liquor. The only silver lining for Khan, 47, was that the court granted him exemption from personal appearance due to professional engagements.
