A surge in the sale of the Gandhi caps was witnessed in Uttar Pradesh, as thousands of people came out in support of anti corruption crusader Anna Hazare across the country in the last two days.

Anna and his signature Gandhi cap became popular among masses and its sale increased in the past few days.

The cap is usually worn on days like Republic and Independence Day, but it has become an important aspect of the anti-graft movement launched by Hazare.

"In the last two to three days, our shop has seen an increase in the demand of caps (Gandhi) and flags. Elderly people want to wear the cap with Khadi clothes and the youth think that wearing the cap would give them a different identity, so they wear it with their casual clothes. With this we get to know that even today there is a relevance of Gandhi ji," said Rameshwar Nath Mishra, owner of Shree Gandhi Ashram in Lucknow.

"Jawaharlal Nehru had said that the Gandhi cap or Khadi is a delivery of Independence. Whoever wears it used to think before wearing it and whosoever wears it considers oneself a soldier for the country," added Mishra.

Mishra also said that majority of the caps were purchased by the youth.

Supporters from all age groups participated in the anti-graft movement, which is popularly referred to as the second freedom struggle.

"On 16th August we realized that we are not yet independent, so we want our freedom back in any condition. And if necessary, every child would wear the Gandhi cap and Khadi," said Devender Singh, a supporter of Anna Hazare.

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
