‘Safe’ vehicles can ply even if they are old
Vehicles need not have a date of expiry and should be allowed to ply on roads as long as they satisfy prescribed norms and standards, irrespective of how old they are, the Supreme Court was on Monday informed by the Centre.
“Even though the Central government is empowered to fix the age limit of vehicles under Section 59 of the Motor Vehicles Act, no policy decision fixing age limit of the vehicles has been taken by the Centre,” the government told a bench headed by Chief Justice Altamas Kabir.
In an affidavit filed before the Supreme Court, the government contended that several steps are being taken by it to enhance road safety and to decongest traffic on roads.
The response was filed to a PIL by Sanjay Kulshrestra, a resident of Agra, seeking the top court’s direction on framing guidelines for decongestion of roads and restricting old vehicles from plying.
Meanwhile, the Supreme Court on Monday issued notice to the Centre on the issue of enforcing emission standards in tune with Euro V for diesel and petrol vehicles in the country.
