Sachan case: Beni wants CBI probe
Union minister of state for steel, Beni Prasad Varma has said that a CBI inquiry alone will expose the truth behind the serial murders in the health department in Uttar Pradesh, particularly the murder of deputy CMO Y.S. Sachan inside the Lucknow jail.
Talking to reporters here on Sunday, the minister said that he had met the family of Dr Sachan and they said that the post-mortem report indicated that he was tortured and then murdered.
“It is possible that he may have been poisoned or rendered unconscious before being done to death but that will remain a mystery since the doctors have not preserved his viscera,” the minister said. Mr Varma accused chief minister Mayawati of misleading the people by saying that she had ordered a judicial inquiry into the incident.
“The inquiry being conducted is by a judicial magistrate which is mandatory and not an inquiry under the Commission of Inquiry Act. This is not an ordinary murder case. The state government seems to be a party to the murder and state agencies cannot be expected to investigate the case in a free manner,” he said.
Mr Varma further pointed out that since politicians and officials were apparently involved in the loot of Central funds in the health department and also in the murders of the two CMOs and one deputy CMO, only a CBI inquiry could possibly bring out the truth.
“If the state government is so keen to act, it must act and recommend a CBI probe. Justice must not be merely done, it must seem to be done also,” he added.
