Rs 1 cr smuggled electronic goods seized

Chennai: Sleuths of Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) have seized smuggled electronic goods worth more than Rs 1 crore and arrested a person in this connection.

Acting on intelligence inputs, DRI officials intercepted a vehicle at Sriperumbudur toll gate and seized 10 cartons and two sacks containing video cameras, digital cameras and i-pods worth Rs 1.35 crore.

Investigations revealed that a person identified as Nizar had booked the goods by air from Singapore to Cochin in the name of Syed Sirajudeen, who went to the city and cleared the goods, which was then transported in a vehicle without valid documents.

Sirajudeen, who was caught with the goods, confessed he had accepted the work for a monetary consideration of Rs 50,000, a press release said.
