Results boost local players
The results of the Assembly elections in Uttar Pradesh, Punjab and Goa have come as a rude shock for the Congress which was hoping to set the tone for the next general election with a new team.
The results could be a game-changer as it has enthused regional players and revived the main Opposition BJP ahead of the presidential election due in July this year. Besides, Assembly elections are due in Gujarat and Himachal Pradesh this year while Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Rajasthan and Delhi are going to the polls next year. In all these states, the fight will be between the Congress and the BJP.
The Congress’ defeat in UP has demoralised the party rank and file across the country as the high-pitched electoral battle was led by AICC general secretary Rahul Gandhi. The Congress might have remained in single digits in Bihar and Tamil Nadu but the Uttar Pradesh battle was altogether different. The Congress campaign started at least two years ago but it could not built up its organisational network.
AICC general secretary Janardan Dwivedi said there were various local and other factors for the Congress’ defeat in the state.
As regards Punjab, he said the defeat there was certainly a setback. He said there could be many reasons for the defeat but one of them appears to be the laxity of the state units.
“Though the atmosphere was in favour of the Congress, the organisation there did not take the desired efforts to turn it into victory,” he said.
