Remand period extended for Italian marines
Chief judicial magistrate A. K. Gopakumar on Monday, extended the remand period of Italian marines Salvatore Girone and Lattore Massimillano for 11 days more, till May 11.
“The court extended the remand period only for 11 days because May 12 and 13 are holidays.
To avoid technical glitches in court proceedings and producing the marines on the last day of the remand period, the court extended the remand only for eleven days,” said K.O. Raju, deputy director of prosecution.
The marines will complete 90 days in jail on May 19 and as per norms, they can avail of bail if the SIT does not file the chargesheet before it.
It is learned that the Italians are not moving for a bail as advised by the top brass.
They have decided to wait for the result on petitions filed in the Supreme Court.
Anyhow, the progress report filed at CJM court in Kollam by the SIT had stated that the firing case comes under SUA that came into existence in 2002and it has to be implied on the case. If SUA is implied the probe can be made only by a central agency.
