‘Recruitment in railways insufficient’
With over 70 employees dying every month due to occupational hazard and stress-related ailments, which along with a large number of retirements of those who had joined in 1974, railways union claim that the proposed recruitment of one lakh will be insufficient to meet the growing requirements of staff due to new trains being added frequently.
“More than 70 employees in various grades are dying every month due to stress-related ailments and occupational hazards. At the same time, a large number of employees are due to retire during 2014-15, who had joined the Railways around 1974. In fact more people will be retiring than what is being proposed in the Rail Budget for recruitment,” South-western Railways union general secretary A.M. D’Cruz said.
All-India Railwa-yman’s Federation (AIRF) has also represented to Union minister of railways Mukul Roy on high level of stress on employees for long service hours due to shortage of staff. AIRF general secretary Shiva Gopal Mishra also said that the recent report by the Kakodkar committee too had highlighted deaths of employees due to stress-related ailments.
Mr D’Cruz said that though the Rail Budget focused on the safety aspect, which has been stated by Mr Roy as his top priority, there will be a shortage of more than 1.50 lakh employees in the safety-related works in the national carrier even after the proposed recruitment.

France seeks clarification on n-liability
Age Correspondent
NEW DELHI, APRIL 5
France has sought clarification from India on the nuclear liability law as it awaits its implementation. For now, France awaits the establishment of a legal framework for foreign agencies to conduct nuclear business.
According to sources, French nuclear experts were in the capital in March. During the visit, they sought clarification from the government on issues concerning the country’s liability regime.
The French are interested in knowing the status of the nuke laws as French company Areva is to build two nuclear-powered European Pressurised Reactors of 1,650 MW each in Jaitapur in Maharashtra. While the Civil Liability for Nuclear Damage Bill was passed by Parliament in 2010 and the rules notified for its implementation in November 2011, matters have not been able to reach their logical conclusion. For, when the rules were placed before Parliament, amendments were moved by the Left parties.
