Rebels to govt: Talk to Baruah
In what may have serious implication over the ongoing peace process with the Ulfa, a large group of surrendered Ulfa rebels here on Monday organised a rally and demanded that the government should take initiative to hold talks with elusive Ulfa chief Paresh Baruah instead of talking to its chairman Arbinda Rajkhowa-led faction in Assam.
The association of surrendered Ulfa rebels, the All-Assam Surrendered Ulfa Samiti, also submitted a memorandum to Assam governor J.B. Patnaik highlighting their plights and ignorance by the government.
The president of the association, Mr Rajkumar Duwarah, who sat on a day-long sit-in strike in front of Raj Bhavan, warned that the peace process with arrested Ulfa leaders who were released to start peace talks would not help in restoring peace in the state.
“The state will continue to bleed unless its military commander Paresh Baruah is roped in for talks,” said former rebel leaders, who also accused that surrendered Ulfa rebels have neither been rehabilitated nor given any assistance by the government.
Mr Duwarah also said, “The charter of demands presented by Arbinda Rajkhowa faction is very confusing. So, to reach to a concrete solution, the government must bring Paresh Baruah into the talks.”
He asserted that the people of Assam have not authorised Rajkhowa to place a charter of demand to the government on their behalf.
